Lamai Beach – Koh Samui

Lamai Beach – Samui’s second largest Beach offers good possibilities for both swimming and sunbathing. It is Koh Samui’s widest beach strip, with golden coarse grained sand and is generally quieter than the busy Chaweng Beach.

Lamai offers all types of accommodation ranging from inexpensive guest houses and hostels to high end, luxury, five star hotels.

In the center of Lamai along the main road one will find many shopping opportunities. Girlie bars are pretty common in the southern part on Lamai’s main road and are getting fewer in the northern part.

Things to see in Lamai

Hin Ta & Hin Yai – Grandmother & Grandfather rocks

One of the main attractions around Lamai area is Hin Ta & Hin Yai (Grandmother and Grandfather Rocks). As they are located very close to each other, this gives way for some legend how this came. At Hin Ta & Hin Yai are plenty of souvenir shops selling food, cold drinks, local handmade candies called Galamae, and a parking lot located near by, which makes a stop at this attraction convenient.

Muslim Fishing Village – Hua Thanon

The rustic Muslim Fishing Village of Hua Thanon is located further south. If you pass the village and continue driving in a south western direction, you will realize that Koh Samui looks quite different here than in the busy north eastern area. Here and within most of the southern area of Koh Samui you will experience how the island looked before becoming a popular tourist destination.

Wat Khunaram – Tempel

This is the temple of Koh Samui’s most famous mummified monk. The monk “Loung Por Daeng” who passed away 40 years ago, requested that his body should be placed in a glass case after dying and be housed in the temple. Since this time the body of the mummified monk remains in very good condition with very few signs of decay.

Walking Street – Street Market

Every Sunday a part of the street in Lamai is closed to traffic to provide space for the stands of the Walking Street, which starts at 5pm and is very popular to local Thais as well as to tourists. Stalls are selling souvenirs, traditional and local Thai food, snacks and drinks, Live music and activities.
